I come from a family of hard working people. My dad was a cop, my mom a school teacher. Both my grandfathers had their own businesses – one in painting and real estate, the other in lumber.
As one of the first on my mom’s side to go to college, I chose my areas of study based on what I knew, and limited my options to becoming a lawyer, doctor or teacher.
Eventually I found my PR calling, but I missed out studying it because I didn’t know it existed. To be honest, I never knew people could have careers in “communications” – it just wasn’t something I knew.
Girls today prepare for their own career options as they go to school, interact with the the world and pursue their interests. They have incredible resources to explore, which means, unlike me, they can better decide and study what they really want.
What hasn’t changed though, are the obstacles faced by women in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math). From a lack of support and mentors, to too many sexist work environments in headlines today, it’s still tough.
As a female-owned agency, we know the Valley needs more female technologists and entrepreneurs. Over the past couple of decades I’ve spent in tech PR, we’ve seen most women in HR and marketing roles, while few hold engineering positions.
That’s why ethosKF — our agency’s Corporate Social Responsibility program — is embarking on a new initiative designed to support and inspire the next generation of female STEM professionals: the “Women Forward in Technology” scholarship program.
In conjunction with others, Kulesa Faul is awarding $3,000 scholarships annually to female college and grad students committed to careers in STEM. The hope is that by empowering these young women to pursue their career dreams, we can help spark the change tech and so many other STEM industries need.
We are also excited to unveil this initiative with Distil Networks – one of our great clients and partners. We look forward to working together to make an impact in an area that really counts with or through a cause that hits home for us and so many of our clients and partners.
Stay tuned for exciting updates on this project! In the meantime, learn more about the Women Forward in Technology scholarship at: https://www.distilnetworks.com/women-forward-in-technology-scholarship/
